The Indian wool is course in comparison to the Chinese production
(generally New Zealand wool) depending on where the wool is sourced.
Quality varies from poor to good. Light colours can contain contamination
(dark flecking through the yarn) The weight of the rug (kilos per sq mtr), the quality of the yarn and the standard of workmanship will generally reflect in the price. A 3 kilo 180x120 (6'x4') tufted Indian rug will cost anywhere from £75 to £275 depending on the factors above.
Chinese Production
A massive range of styles with with most of the market leaders sourcing product via Chinese workshops.
Extensive use of top grade New Zealand wool, which gives these rugs a high lustre and fabulous soft handle.Quality ranges from good to excellent, (with the exception of some of the Cloth backed copies of Hand knotted Traditional Chinese designs which can be horrendous). With some qualities costing more than Hand knotted rugs. Art silk (mercurised cotton) or in some cases real silk is sometimes used to highlight a design. Sizes range from 120 x60 ( 4'x2' ) upto 366x274 ( 12'x9' ) Circles, Runners and in some cases Hexagonals available.
As with Indian production the price will be determined by the quality of the
wool, stitch rate ,weight and workmanship. A 6x4 Chinese rug can cost as little as £49 but do not confuse this with some of amazing qualities available. A 180x120 ( 6'x4') Chinese rug using premium quality wool will cost anywhere from £150 upto £400 for wool and silk.
